Specialized Allez: the current position

The current Allez platform uses Specialized's E5 aluminium frame, a carbon fork, disc brakes and clearance for modern road tyres. One current model uses a Shimano CUES drivetrain and 30mm tyres.

That creates a more versatile road bike than the narrow-tyred, rim-brake entry models common in 2011, while keeping the Allez focus on accessible road performance.

What has changed

The Allez 16 reviewed by RideIn belonged to the rim-brake, 16-speed era. Current gearing, braking, axle and tyre standards are different enough that parts and ride impressions cannot simply be transferred.

The enduring theme is a relatively accessible aluminium road bike. Fit, usable gearing and tyre clearance matter more than the continuity of the name.

The original Allez 16 page placed the model among accessible road bikes for riders moving to drop bars and narrower tyres. RideIn valued its efficient road position, aluminium frame and carbon-bladed fork as a quicker alternative to a conventional hybrid.

The 16-speed drivetrain suited ordinary road riding of the period, but the Allez name has covered many generations and the actual year must be confirmed.

How it rides and who it suits

Choose an Allez for road rides and faster tarmac commuting where drop bars and a more forward position are comfortable. A flat-bar hybrid may be better for frequent stop-start traffic.

Check the actual tyre clearance with mudguards and ensure the lowest gear suits local climbs.

Checks before buying

Manufacturers can change components during a model's sales life, and stock can span more than one model year. Check the exact bicycle being offered rather than relying on the family name alone.

  • Confirm the exact model year and specification on the retailer page
  • Choose by reach and riding position, not only the nominal frame size
  • Check tyre clearance plus rack, mudguard and bottle-mount compatibility
  • Allow for pedals, lights, a lock and any workshop setup in the complete cost

Ownership, setup and safety

A new bicycle still needs correct assembly and a safety check. Confirm wheel security, bar and stem alignment, brake operation, gear adjustment and tyre pressure before the first road ride. Use the component maker's torque values rather than guessing.

Keep the drivetrain clean, inspect the tyres and brake pads, and deal with play or unusual noise early. A qualified mechanic should assess suspected structural damage, persistent brake problems or work that requires specialist tools.
