The Crossway 100 page was aimed at riders moving up from a very basic mountain bike. RideIn said the difference was most noticeable in acceleration and handling and regarded the model as a practical entry point to hybrid commuting.

Its seven gears were described as adequate for ordinary commuting hills. Gradient, luggage, fitness and the gearing actually fitted to a surviving example will determine whether that remains true for a buyer today.

How to assess a used example now

Consumables such as tyres, chains, cables and brake pads are normal service items. Damage to a proprietary frame, fork, folding mechanism or obsolete component can be far more difficult to resolve.

• Confirm the frame size suits the rider
• Inspect frame and fork for cracks, dents and corrosion
• Check both wheels are true
• Test every gear and both brakes
• Look for drivetrain wear and damaged tyres
• Verify the frame number and ownership history

Check fit and practical equipment

Confirm the rider can reach the brakes comfortably and that gearing covers the steepest regular climb. Inspect rack and mudguard mounts, tyre clearance and handlebar position. A neglected suspension fork can be more difficult to service than a sound rigid one.

Recreate the intended journey

Value and current alternatives

Judge the asking price against condition, service history and immediate work. A maintained older bicycle can be an excellent everyday machine, while a neglected bargain can cost more than a ready-to-ride alternative.
