Consumables such as tyres, chains, cables and brake pads are normal service items. Damage to a proprietary frame, fork, folding mechanism or obsolete component can be far more difficult to resolve.

• Test every gear and both brakes
• Look for drivetrain wear and damaged tyres

Check fit and practical equipment

Confirm the rider can reach the brakes comfortably and that gearing covers the steepest regular climb. Inspect rack and mudguard mounts, tyre clearance and handlebar position. A neglected suspension fork can be more difficult to service than a sound rigid one.
